You dream, we build.

One of my best friends asked me if I could make a thing that he was dreaming. I asked him about detailed specification --- I'm always impressed his clear and concrete vision --- and ordered several components online. I also started writing a code that would be installed in an embedded microprocessor.

24 hours later, the components arrived at my lab, and the code was ready. I did some DIY works with drill and soldering iron for about 6 hours.

I opened Kuroneko delivery service with Google Chrome and typed in my friend's address. They picked up the new dream device after another 6 hours. These hours were used for dry-run test (and writing an invoice).

Just 36 hours could make his dream real.

And this is what I learned from Tom Chi.

Physical Computing

In my lecture Physical Computing at Kyoto Saga University of Arts, students (and I) are learning how to combine Processing programming and physical devices.

We started off the lecture with tutorial of Processing, and then tutorial of Arduino, then finally combination of them. We are using Firmata and Funnel for communication between Processing process and Arduino.

Please check out my lecture record (in Japanese) for more detail.

The Pineapple Store

It is our pleasure to announce that the Pineapple Store is now open as scheduled.

So, what is Pineapple II at all? It is a microcomputer dedicated to media artists. By using Pineapple II you can connect virtually any type of sensors to your Mac/PC. The sensors connected via Pineapple II is treated as a MIDI instrument from your computer, thus you can create your artwork on Quartz Composer (Mac) and/or MAX (Mac/PC).

What does it mean to you? You'll never need to write any code for creating your art work.

The store will ship Pineapple II model 2013 revision 1. Firmware, and schematic of the microcomputer are open under GNU GPLv3 and Creative Commons NC-BY-SA 3.0 licences respectively.

Monday, 25 March 2013

Schematic and source code of Pineapple I TM2013B

Schematic and source code of Pineapple I TM2013B to TM2013D (internally named P113B to P113D) are now OpenSource at GitHub.

Japan-America Frontier of Engineering

On 17 January 2013, I stepped down from the general co-chair person of Japan-America Frontier of Engineering. I had been involved to JAFOE since 2007, and was at that position from 2009. I couldn't have been happier without such an excellent team.

In 2012, as my last JAFOE event, I and Katherine (general co-chair of US side) held a symposium dedicated for Engineering for X in Irvine, California. It was one of my dream to have that conference among Japan and US.

I'm so proud of every organisers, speakers, general participants, back-office staffs supporting JAFOE.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

PS. The award is not just mine, but yours.

The Day of Earthquake

1.17 is the day of earthquake. In 1994 a great earthquake hit California. And exact 1 year later, in 1995, another great earthquake hit Kansai, where I used to live.

Before 3.11, the day of earthquake had pointed to 1.17. Fortunately I have survived the both disasters.
